Mechanotherapy Course: From Moderate to Severe Malocclusions
CTOR Academy offers ADA CERP approved course for students enrolled in Orthodontic Specialty programs. Content is tailored for first and second year residents. It provides students with both the theoretical and practical skills needed to diagnose and generate a mechanotherapy plan for even the most complex dental and orthopedic malocclusions.
Objectives
Course attendees will learn how to predictably and efficiently achieve specific biological responses using properly designed mechanics. The course will introduce the different stages and objectives of treatment, along with the appropriate mechanics to use at each stage. Evidence-based discussions on one-couple systems, two-couple systems, friction and torque will provide insights into how physics influences biology. Attendees will become familiar with advanced mechanotherapy tools and methodology to accelerate tooth movement and to expand the boundaries of orthodontic corrections. Using CTOR Academy’s Mechanotherapy in Orthodontics textbooks, this course introduces attendees to basic biomechanics principles and mechanotherapy, with an emphasis on clinical applications.

Instructors
Mani Alikhani, DMD, MS, PhD
Dr. Alikhani is Professor and Dean at CTOR Academy, and faculty at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. CTOR, the only center in the world dedicated to Translational Research in Orthodontics, has developed new approaches and technological advances for treatment of skeletal deformities and different types of malocclusion. His clinical approach is to treat severe jaw and dental deformities in patients seeking non-surgical treatment options using advanced biological and mechanical concepts.
Dr. Alikhani is a leader in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics having co-founded the New York Section of the American Association for Dental, Oral and Craniofacial Research (AADOCR) and the Orthodontics Research Group (ORG) of the International Association for Dental Research (IADR). In addition, he co-founded and is Editor-In-Chief of Innovation, an on-line, open access journal for biomedical scientists who conduct cutting-edge research.

Fanar Abdullah, DDS, MS
Dr. Fanar Abdullah, is Assistant Professor at CTOR Academy. She is an orthodontist with a Master’s degree in Bioengineering. Dr Abdullah’s research focuses on non-surgical treatment of patients with skeletal deformities with special interest on condylar response to mechanical stimulation. Dr. Abdullah’s research was recognized with the prestigious Innovation Award from the Orthodontics Research Group (ORG) at the 2022 IADR meeting.

Marcos Giovanetti, DDS, PhD
Dr. Marcos Giovanetti is Associate Professor at CTOR Academy. He is a specialist and has a PhD in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, and Master degree in TMJ Dysfunction. He sees a wide variety of patients and is an expert in aligner treatments. Dr. Giovanetti’s research focus is on materials science and his most recent project was to develop an improved aligner treatment system, CTOR Aligners. He is currently president of the Orthodontics Research Group of IADR.
